A Reflection on Action
Thank you to 2019 Nick6 years ago I could not have imagined living working as hard as I do, for as little money, less certainty, and wanting more of it – at least more of the process and hope of impacting the world 🌍 in a positive way.
I say this because I can see a former version of myself, one who aligns more with the “life balance” or “works to live” crowd rather than the “find something you love and never work a day in your life” crowd… quietly saying to myself “its not possible”.
Even with more uncertainty in my life today, I sleep better and worry 😌 less. The fear that once held me back is now replaced by the drive to build 🔨✨.
I do not believe passion of this kind is innate. I believe passion of this kind grows from action. Action is the first mover, not certainty, validation or motivation. These are all downstream effects of action 🚀.
My action 6 years ago was a decision to build an app. First working a few hours on the weekends. Then adding hours prior to work. Then using my vacation time to take time off. Then eventually quitting.
This was not a “success”. ❌
Today I would revise how I did things but not the overall direction I took. “2025 Nick” is forever grateful for “2019 Nick” those baby steps were the kernel to turning into who I am today – less fear and need for material things and a greater zeal for building 🙏🔥.
To paraphrase a TikTok proverb “The bird does not take a place on a branch because it is confident it will not break but because it is confident it can fly away if the branch broke”. 🐦🌿 Today I am not more tolerant to risk because I am confident in a successful outcome, but I am confident of my skills and willingness to put forth the effort necessary for a successful outcomes. 💪
2019 Nick couldn’t take on a project with a low chance of success — he didn’t have the stomach, the skillset, or the ‘want-to’ to see it through. 2025 Nick believes he can meaningfully shape the outcome of any project. 🎯
